Kinetic SBS1 BaseStation
Utilities

Those who have SBS know what this page is about. Those who don't have it need to visit Kinetic Avionics
.

Most of the downloads below have been created by ordinary SBS users. Some of the programs have proper Windows installation routines but many are just ZIP files containing new data sets or maybe a document explaining how to change SBS settings. For the latter files it is strongly recommended that the included instructions are read carefully.

If a download involves making changes you are not familiar with - such as editing an INI file in Notepad - then please do not try making such changes until you clearly understand what is involved. The authors of the software listed below have provided the files on the understanding that users only proceed if they are familiar with copying or file editing. Ask for help in the forum (or by email) if you don't. I have to add that no author is liable for any errors made by users installing the software - but we will all offer help and advise for anyone who is not sure how to proceed.

SBS Downloads

The use of most of the downloads listed below is explained in my BareBones tutorial on the
Kinetic SBS 1 website.

    Outline Files - Coastlines

Medium Resolution /High Resolution Coastline sets

Medium resolution coastline files are ideal for low end systems and cover: England, Ireland and Scotland

High Resolution coastline files are for users with high end systems and cover: UK, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands and Northern France.

Note: Both coastline sets are included in the one zip file so users must ensure both sets are not active at the same time. See the readme file for details.

    Other Files

    Improved Civil/Military Flags sets

These sets are designed to replace the default country flags in the BMPFlags folder and provide both updated data and additional flags.

There are seven sets available with options for standard or wide bitmaps, civil and military flag sets and even pale or dark backgrounds for the military roundels. The sets are:

    Standard Bitmap size (20 x 20 pixels)

Set 1. Country flags - a basic set replacing the Kinetic bitmaps but with spelling corrected and additional flags for countries omitted from the original list.

Set 2. Country Registration Prefixes - An alternative to Set 1 with bitmaps showing the country registration prefix instead of the national flag.

Set 3. Military Roundels (Dark) - An additional set to provide military roundels. These roundels have a dark background.

Set 4. Military Roundels (Light) - An alternative to Set 3. These roundels have a light background.

Users only need download two of the above files. You should choose between Sets 1 and 2 and between Sets 3 and 4.

    Wide Bitmap size (40 x 20 pixels)

Set 5. Country flags and Reg prefix - a basic set replacing the Kinetic bitmaps but with spelling corrected and additional flags for countries omitted from the original list. This wide bitmap set combines flag and reg prefix into one image.

Set 6. Military Roundels (Dark)- An additional set to provide military roundels. These roundels have a dark background.

Set 7. Military Roundels (Light) - An alternative to Set 6. These roundels have a light background.

The flag sets above will not display on the Basestation aircraft listing unless an updated countries.dat file is installed. The DAT file is a separate zip (because it is still undergoing frequent revision./update) and contains all known country and military Mode S allocations to date. It is updated as new information is discovered - usually quarterly.

    Operator Logos

The new logo column in Basestation 129 now allows the use of operator logos in the aircraft listing. This starter set contains 1068 bitmaps for airlines, charter aircraft, business aircraft and military operators.

The bitmaps are large (85 x 20) and not ideally suited for users of existing bitmaps sets from Andy (FlyingArt) and Mark Coles.

Read the included readme.txt file before installing these bitmap sets.

    Third Party Resources

Other useful files are available from the Kinetic Resources forum but these are getting buried as the number of posts increase. Below are some items that I have come across in forum posts.

Note that some thread titles bear no resemblance to the utilities they describe! The inevitable thread drift syndrome..

The SBS software has been updated with a major change to the database structure. The earlier Spider software stored data in XML files whilst the new Snoopy upgrade is using an SQLite database. XML utilities will not work with Snoopy - and SQL utilities will not work with Spider.

    ACARSD 1.7

ACARSD is a free ACARS decoder that can also process Mode S data from SBS. When first released ACARSD provided much additional data (including photographs and routes) not available in BaseStation. Despite these now being provided from other utilities ACARSD is still well worth exploring.

    SBSNet Ethernet Adaptor

SBSnet is intended to be a bridge between the USB port of the SBS-1 and an Ethernet network. It will not require opening of the SBS-1 case, but uses the current USB cable and an Ethernet cable on the other side. This will make it possible to view your SBS-1 flight data anywhere in your local network or the Internet.
